Mo' Planets, Mo' Problems

By weestro

Nasa’s Kepler spacecraft telescope, on the search for Earth-like planets , recently came across what has been named HD 855 12b. This planet, besides having a horrible name, could have a life sustaining environment.

Orbiting a star, just 35 light years away, average temperatures are said to be 72 degrees. "This is a major milestone on the road to finding Earth's twin” says Douglas Hudgins, a Nasa scientist.

This poses many questions, at least for me. What if there is a planet out there similar to ours? What if, somewhere, there's a sister planet exactly like ours? We've always thought of aliens as little green men with huge heads and big eyes. What if, in fact, they look just like us?

As my mind started to wander, the questions came pouring in. Do they have different races? Different cultures and ethnic backgrounds? If so, could they teach us something about race relations? We obviously still have a lot to learn.

Are they violent? Do they use guns or lasers? Maybe something we haven’t thought of. What is the crime rate like on HD 855 12b?

What about politics? Does it have rich countries and poor countries? I wonder if they have Capitalism, Communism, or some other kind of ism we don't know about. Do they even have countries? Are boundaries something unique to us? Do the counties on HD 855 12b have wars, or is this something only done on Earth? I wonder if they have developed nuclear bombs to annihilate one another.

What about religion? Or religious freedoms? Does it have a Holy Land, and disputes over it? Do they have radical types from different religions that feel it is there calling to make sure everyone on HD 855 12b believes in their God? What about Holocausts, slavery, or genocide? So many questions..

What about dinosaurs, or cave men? The ice age and climate change? Do they have cars? Compact, mid-size, and suv's? The internal combustion engine? Or did they go green long before us? Maybe they could help us settle this environmental issue once and for all. I wonder if they have protests with college students holding up signs reading, Save Mother HD 855 12b! It doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

Then there is entertainment. What do they do for fun? (No, I don't mean that! Hmm interesting though..) Something completely foreign to us? Do they have music or movies? Do they have end of the world movies like we do? Maybe to them we are the little green men coming down in a saucer, wow this is getting exhausting!

I have many questions, most of which will not be answered in my lifetime. I've always thought about other life forms, it seems space is just too big and too vast not to have life somewhere out there. I'm sure I'm not the only one thinking about this. What's out there....anything? Maybe I watched one too many sci fi movies as a kid.

Good hub Weestro, but these are all very interesting questions we have been asking ourselves for centuries even before we discovered what appear to be habitable planets. Yes, the Kepler probe have discovered a lot of exoplanets but only a handful of them are considered to habitable as far as we can tell from the data the probe have sent us so far. After all we are talking about worlds light-years away from us. Also, life on another planet may not have evolved to the same stage of complexity as we are on some of those other planets because most of the planets out there are probably in the same age range as our own solar system about 5 to 6 billion years old if they have not been destroyed by some unforeseen force.

Some life forms, if they are out there, cannot possibly be that much further ahead than we are in terms of evolution. Keep in mind the universe is 14.8 billion years old. Life in a lot of these places may be simply microbial in nature. Until we get some form of definitive evidence by communication we can only speculate on what might be out there. In this case we will have to wait 70 years or more for the round trip that a communication signal would have to make to response to us and besides, SETI have not picked up anything from these newly discovered earth-like planets so far. And one more thing, HD 855 12b and some of the other planets discovered recently may not be out there anymore, that electromagnetic wave Kepler is receiving started 35 years ago.

35 light years away means that if there is life on HD 855 12b, they are far behind us, because we have been listening for years for intelligent signals from space, but have never received a thing..

Great points guys, I just think with so much space, more than we can fathom, we can't definitively say exactly what is out there! Melpor, you sound way more knowledgeable about this topic than I am, so I appreciate your insight, as with yours WillStar. I guess I just wanted to write about a fictional planet...Thanks for the comments, very interesting for sure!

Very fascinating and it would be interesting if what you wrote really existed, weestro

Thanks mathira, I'm not sure about the science, but I thought it was something interesting to think about nonetheless..

I would think about the same things too Weestro. I do believe that there is more to the solar system than us, I just think that the "others" glanced at our existence and reconsidered getting in touch.

Hi, fascinating, I often wonder if there is life out there, but of course it can't be the same or even similar to us because we came about through coincidence caused by a number of factors such as the dinosaurs being wiped out by an asteroid, monkeys splitting of into different groups and of course the amino acids that started life adapting to this planet, but it would be great if there were, and I would love to see what they look like!

It's interesting to ponder on those kind of things. At one point, during my reading of this hub, it felt like you were almost making a social commentary on the human race. I found that funny, whether it was intentional or not. Thank you.

Good point Jenu, and quite possible!

Yeah, I can't even begin to fathom what may be out there PDX! Thank you.

Me to Nell, it's definitely mmore than I can comprehend!

As I wrote it, it kind of morphed into the comentary, and then I have a tendency to sound like a grumpy old man echoe!

Thanks for stopping by guys, I appreciate it!

weestro, that's half the fun, isn't it? if we knew all the answers, life would be quite boring
